Summary:

The Department of Energy, South Africa (DoE) is undertaking the construction of a solar power plant in Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa.

The project involves the construction of a 75MW solar power plant. It includes the construction of substations, access roads and related infrastructure, the installation of solar panels and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.

Norfund, the Norwegian Investment Fund will hold 18% equity share.

In July 2014, DoE issued a request for proposals (RFP) under the REIPP to select a contractor for the project with the submission deadline on August 18, 2014.

The public announcement of the preferred bidders in the fourth round of the REIPPPP has been delayed since November 2014. 

On April 16, 2015, DOE disclosed the names of the first 13 renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) preferred bidders which have, until the fourth quarter of 2015, to take their projects to financial closure. 

South African Department of Energy selected six successful bids for solar power plants with a total capacity of 415MW under the fourth round of REIPPPP. Scatec Solar won three solar power plant projects with a combined nominal capacity of 225 MW. The project forms the part of the winning bids, under the terms, Scatec Solar plans will build, own and operate the project with 42% shareholding. 

Aurora Power Solutions was also appointed as the developer for the proposed project.
